Timing Your Next Email Marketing Campaign

There’s been a long standing assumption that more people will open your business’ marketing email Monday through Thursday than they will on Friday, and that you certainly wouldn’t risk sending your email out over the weekend for fear of getting lost in junk folders never to be opened. However, a recent study by ExactTarget has dispelled these myths.

Email open rates actually increase progressively each day of the week from a low of 31.5% on Saturdays to a high of 39.6% Fridays, Also surprising is that Sundays draw the highest click-through rates of 6.9%, and that Wednesday and Saturday share the lowest rates of 6.1%, Seasonality plays a role as well, with Spring generating better click-thru rates at the end of the week, versus Fall and Winter generally tending to higher click-thrus at the early part of the week.

Of course, there are significant variables to consider such as your specific proposition and your target audience. But clearly, this study shows that our previous assumptions about timing and effectiveness of email campaigns may need to be re-examined. The best results are always obtained with the tried and true method of testing, testing and repeat testing.

Search Advertising Tools Improve
Google’s new analytical tool for paid placement is allowing for closer tracking of paid advertisements through to conversion. SPIDERtel is now part of the Beta program for analyzing this analytical tool and helping shape its development. Meanwhile, MSN is getting ready to release a new version of its paid placement analysis tool, which includes demographic profiles, allowing for marketing to specific market segments based on key factors such as age and gender. Both Yahoo and Google have recently unveiled tools which allow the management and analysis of changes to advertising copy, giving marketers the ability to fine-tune and assess the impact of various ads.

The tools have vastly improved as the stakes for the search giants and the marketers that use them get higher.

Some news worthy items, we all may be able to apply to our own businesses:

Google Raises The Roof
Google's new mapping technology rocks!! If you haven't checked it out yet, we strongly encourage you to. It combines super-intuitive mapping tools with satellite photos.

Many large box, brick & mortar companies are beginning to see the advantage of this tool as well. With the ability to zoom in using satellite photos, rooftops are now visible, clearing the way (literally) for great advertising.

Target stores, for example, are beginning to appear on the maps with their well-branded, red target logo on their store roof, giving it extra visibility when map users are viewing the area.

Got rooftop?

Are You Ready For T.V.?
Spot Runner, a new startup from the founders of PeoplePC, have launched a new service to allow just about any small business to run cheap (and we DO mean "cheap") commercials in thousands of small markets across the U.S.

By purchasing air-time in large volume, Spot Runner offers businesses "template" commercials with the ability to customize them with your log, name and other details. 30 second commercials run from just $7 to $34 in some markets, depending on time of day.

At that rate, it might be worth a try to test the market. Trouble is, you'd also be testing a "generic ad" concept at the same time you introduce your products to the market.
